Philips reports 1,000 SmartSpeed Precise MRI installations

The adoption milestone is real. The projected time savings still need local verification.

Philips announced on 14 October that its SmartSpeed Precise MRI technology had reached 1,000 installations worldwide. The milestone installation was at Unilabs Switzerland, where the company says the technology is deployed across 10 Philips MR systems.

What Philips is claiming

SmartSpeed Precise combines AI-based acceleration and image reconstruction. Philips reports imaging that can be up to three times faster and up to 80% sharper than Philips SENSE-based imaging. It also estimates an average saving of 215 scanner hours per system each year, equivalent to potential capacity for roughly 624 additional examinations.

These are manufacturer-reported comparisons and capacity estimates, not independently verified results from every installation. The baseline technique matters, as do the selected sequences and the way image quality is assessed.

What matters in an MRI department

More acquisition capacity does not automatically create more appointments. Patient preparation, positioning, contrast workflows, staffing and reporting capacity can still determine throughput. For technologists, a useful evaluation is protocol by protocol: Does the shortened acquisition preserve the anatomical detail needed for that examination? Are motion, noise and reconstruction artifacts acceptable? Do radiologists approve the resulting images?

The installation count indicates adoption. The clinical benefit at a particular site has to be measured against that site's own protocols and workflow.
